Pentecost, patron of the Abbey of Follina
📅 Every year, on Pentecost Sunday
Follina celebrates Pentecost, its patron feast, on whichever Sunday it falls each year.
The name is a trade: Follina comes from the medieval Latin «fullare», that is fulling, the beating of woollen cloth. The people who brought that work into the valley were the Cistercians, who settled here around the middle of the twelfth century and built the abbey of Santa Maria; the cloister was completed in 1268, and the names from that building site are on record: the builder monks Arnaldo and Andrea and the master masons Zardino and Armano.
The trade held for centuries. Around 1680 Francesco Fadda of Brescia opened a manufactory here, among the first in Italy to try imitating the finer, lighter English and Dutch cloths; around 1740 came the Tron and Stahl wool mills, with foreign technicians. Then, in the second half of the nineteenth century, the crisis: by 1891 not one wool mill was still working. Of the work that made the village, the name is what is left.
