Pieve di Soligo

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 12,057 · Postal code: 31053

The coat of arms of Pieve di Soligo tells of a division. In the fourteenth century the river Soligo cut the village into two zones under different powers: on the left bank was the Pieve del Contà, belonging to the Brandolini da Bagnacavallo counts, vassals of Venice — hence the white and red stripes; on the right the Pieve del Trevisan, subject to the March of Treviso, and hence the towers, emblem of the Treviso assembly. The blue band in the middle is the river, and the strip crossing it is the bridge. The gold cross stands for the pieve, recorded from 1192, from which the village took its name; and at the base is written Solicum, the Latin name of the Soligo.

One of the oldest streets of the centre is called Cal Santa; it begins just east of the parish church and ends at the cemetery, marked by a Way of the Cross. It is a place that recurs often in the poems of Andrea Zanzotto, who however calls it by another name: Contrada Zauberkraft. In the little church of Santa Croce, of 1885, there is instead a fresco of the Holy Family in which appears the castle of Collalto as it once was: the Great War would almost entirely destroy it, and that painting is one of the things that remember it. In the cathedral, consecrated in 1924, Giuseppe Toniolo is buried.

Saint Mary Magdalene, patron of the land of the Spiedo Gigante

📅 Every year, on 22 July; Barbisano celebrates its local patron Saint Catherine on 25 November

Pieve di Soligo celebrates Saint Mary Magdalene on 22 July, with a Mass held at the church dedicated to her. In the hamlet of Barbisano, Saint Catherine, its local patron, is instead celebrated on 25 November. A great rivalry exists between the town's two districts, showing itself during the «Lo Spiedo Gigante» village fair.
