The archpriest's church of Santa Maria Maddalena is the parish church of Oriago, a hamlet of Mira along the Naviglio del Brenta. A church at Oriago is first mentioned in 1297; the present building was begun in the fifteenth century and altered in the sixteenth. It depended on the diocese of Treviso, and in 1927 it passed to the patriarchate of Venice; today it belongs to the vicariate of Gambarare.
What to see
It has a single nave with side chapels. It keeps a canvas attributed to Francesco Vecellio, brother of the better-known Titian. The ceiling is much more recent: it was painted in 1947 by Beppi Spolaor, a painter born in Mira.
The bell tower is in Romanesque style, with an octagonal belfry.
Visiting
Opening and Mass times should be checked with the parish of Oriago.
Our editors' tip
Oriago is also the village of Villa Mocenigo, on the right bank of the Naviglio del Brenta: anyone coming for the church can see the eighteenth-century villa, now owned by the municipality of Mira.
