Saint Roch, patron of Albaredo d'Adige
📅 Every year, on 16 August
Albaredo d'Adige celebrates Saint Roch on 16 August.
Albaredo d'Adige has 5,232 inhabitants on the left bank of the Adige, south-east of Verona, and its name comes from the Latin albarus, a kind of poplar, with the suffix that marks abundance: a place planted with trees. The river, though, has not always passed here: the breach at Cucca, traditionally dated to 589, is the event to which the abandonment of the old bed towards Pressana, Bevilacqua and Montagnana is traced, and the shift to the present course.
Under Venice the village enjoyed exemptions from duties and from military service; in 1610 the Council of Ten, against the opinion of the governors of Cologna, granted it a market on Fridays, exempting sellers and buyers from taxes: the weekly market is still held on a Friday. From 1897 a steam tramway linked Verona with Coriano, but it broke down so often that driver and passengers had to borrow draught animals to reach the city; they called it el masenin, the little grinder, and it was suppressed in 1927.
