Ronco all'Adige

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 6,179 · Postal code: 37055

The name is a tool: ronco comes from the roncola, the billhook with which in the Middle Ages the reclaimers cut and grubbed up to make the land fit for the plough, and it recurs across half the Italian plain. Here the land had to be wrested from the water and then held on to: the village is said to have been destroyed by the flood of 589 and cut down by the plague that followed, in 1224 a fire burned it, and in 1593 the reclamation consortium was set up. In the hamlet of Scardevara, meanwhile, the apse of the old parish church of 1100 has come down to us intact.

Tradition tells that from the bell tower of Ronco Napoleon directed the battle of the bridge of Arcole against the Austrians. Another ambition, much later, did not go so well: the steam tramway from Verona to Albaredo and Coriano, which had a stop here and ran only between 1898 and 1925, was meant to be the first piece of an integrated transport scheme, with a great river port on the Adige at Albaredo. The port was never built. What remain are the fields, which give the Nano Vialone Veronese rice, watered from resurgent springs, and apples, pears and white asparagus.
