Arcole

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 6,144 · Postal code: 37040

The village is first mentioned in 1224, but its name is known to anyone who has opened a history book: between 15 and 17 November 1796, on the bridge across the Alpone, Napoleon Bonaparte beat the Austrians. The battle of the bridge of Arcole gave its name to streets and squares across half of Europe, and here it has left an obelisk that Napoleon himself had raised on the right bank of the stream: it is the only original Napoleonic monument left in Italy, and the municipality has put it on its coat of arms.

The Latin inscriptions at the foot of the obelisk might have carried a different signature: the commission was first offered to Ugo Foscolo, but the negotiation came to nothing, and it was Calimero Cattaneo who wrote them. The relics of the battle are kept today in a small museum in the centre of the village. Arcole also gives its name to a DOC wine, whose production area spreads over some twenty municipalities across the provinces of Verona and Vicenza, with one precise condition: the soils must be sandy. And in April there is the asparagus fair.
