Veronella

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,670 · Postal code: 37040

Veronella has 4,670 inhabitants south-east of Verona, and until 1902 it was called Cucca. The name was changed because it lent itself to jokes which the administration judged offensive to the dignity of its citizens; the new one was taken from the castrum leonis, the great curve the Adige left drawn in the ground when it passed this way in ancient times. It is a pity, because that name is written in all the books: on 17 October 589 the Adige broke its banks precisely at Cucca, and that flood — the rotta della Cucca — is held responsible for upsetting the whole hydrography of the lower Veneto.

Cucca in its turn took its name from the smooth, round hillock on which the castle stood, like the back of a cochineal; in the village the old fortress is still called the Cucchetta. In 1382 the last of the Scaligeri, Antonio, gave this territory — more than four thousand fields — to his captain Cortesia Marassi di Serego, to thank him for services rendered. Five centuries later, the mayor who obtained the change of name was called Alberto di Serego.
