Roncà

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 3,726 · Postal code: 37030

The name comes from the Latin runcare, to clear woodland, that is to make uncultivated ground arable, and the coat of arms says the same thing: two crossed billhooks on a golden field. The clearing has a date and a price: on the twentieth of January 1300 Alberto della Scala agreed with a group of Cimbri that they could farm the land for nothing, on the sole condition of handing over to him, at the end of each year, twenty soldi and a lamb. The oldest church, Santa Margherita in Costalberto, belongs to the same period, and on the monument to those who fell for freedom the covering slab is the lid of a Roman sarcophagus.

Venice then regulated the crops — the Durella grape was already known under the name Durasena — reclaimed land and canalised the streams; between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries plague and famine cut the village down to a few hundred people. These hills are volcanic in origin, and the wine that comes off them is called Durello, given its D.O.C. in 1987. Roncà also gives its name to a piece of geology: the Roncà beds, the fossil-bearing unit of Monte Duello, whose finds are kept in the village fossil museum. At Terrossa, on the last Sunday of July, an old donkey palio is run.
