Feast of the Annunciation
📅 Every year, on 25 March
On 25 March Calvene celebrates its patroness Saint Mary of the Annunciation, to whom the town's church is dedicated; the Cima del Porco and Monte Cavalletto are in its territory.
In 917 the emperor Berengar gave the bishop of Padua all the land between the Astico and the Brenta, the Asiago plateau included, but with an obligation: to build castles on it, because the Hungarians were coming. Calvene had the parish church and was the most direct way up to the plateau, and a castle, a rocca and a tower went up here.
The inventory of the property of Vicenza of 1262 still lists them all, with the moat, the square and the courthouse; by the end of the fourteenth century nothing was left, and it is not known when or how they were pulled down. The place names remain: Castellaro, Rocca, Monte Castello. In the nineteenth century the Chiavona, in flood, carried away the cemetery and the old parish church.
