Saint Martin of Tours, patron of the land of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Pieve
📅 Every year, on 11 November
Chiampo celebrates Saint Martin of Tours on 11 November, in the church dedicated to him and Our Lady of the Assumption.
The coat of arms of Chiampo is not Chiampo's. At the start of the nineteen-thirties, in what was thought to be the old town hall, a bas-relief was found showing a rampant goat holding an eagle between its horns; it was assumed to be the community's emblem under Venetian rule, and in 1933 it was adopted as the town's arms. In fact it was the coat of arms of the noble Capra family of Vicenza — a goat for the Capras, a pun that had nothing to do with the village — and the piece was there because that room had once been a marble workshop.
Chiampo is twinned with Galtellì, in Sardinia, and that too came about by chance: an exchange of letters between Grazia Deledda and an inhabitant of the village. For the rest, the valley is full of signs of devotion: thirty-one votive shrines, some of the seventeenth century, twenty-five niches with the Madonna or the Crucifix, four fifteenth-century painted tablets. At the Franciscan sanctuary, instead, there is a grotto of Lourdes built in 1935 in concrete and iron by brother Claudio Granzotto, who is buried at its foot: a copy of the one in the Pyrenees, made with the materials of the twentieth century.
