San Pietro Mussolino

Province: Vicenza · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,613 · Postal code: 36070

The comune is made of four settlements — La Fabbrica, Mussolino, San Pietro Nuovo and San Pietro Vecchio — once far apart from one another and now almost joined by new houses and workshops. Of the name there are two explanations: the Venetian mussolin, that is mosquito, of which there were many here, or the Latin mansus, a piece of uncultivated ground: in the thirteenth century these lands were given to the Cimbri to clear.

In 1331 the village lay under the vicariate of Arzignano and the Scaliger podestà of Vicenza; five years later it took part in a rising against the Scaligeri and got administrative privileges out of it. On the arms there is an upside-down cross: it is the martyrdom of saint Peter, the patron.
