Saint Andrew the Apostle, patron among the Venetian villas
📅 Every year, on 30 November
Sarcedo celebrates Saint Andrew the Apostle on 30 November, in the church dedicated to him.
Sarcedo has 5,303 inhabitants between the Astico and the Igna, where the volcanic hills come down to the plain. The name comes from the Latin querquetum, the oak wood, and the centuries-old oaks are still there; it appears for the first time in a document of 983, the privilege with which bishop Rodolfo of Vicenza endowed the Benedictine abbey of San Felice. From the village the eye reaches from Monte Grappa to the Euganean Hills.
In the Middle Ages Sarcedo and Bodo were two distinct centres, each with its own castle. The one at Sarcedo appears in all the imperial diplomas and in 1292 was still in working order, with banks and ditches, co-owned by the Maltraversi counts and the Verlati; then it vanishes from the documents, probably destroyed in the wars between Padua and Vicenza. Nothing is left of the castle: only the hill towards Thiene that people still call Castellano. In July 1323 the shepherds, who were the largest part of the village, obtained from Cangrande the right to graze in the plain from December to Easter.
