Saint Bartholomew and Villa Godi
📅 Every year, on 24 August
Fara Vicentino celebrates Saint Bartholomew the Apostle on 24 August, in the church dedicated to him.
The name is Lombard: a «fara» was the armed kin-group that settled in a place, and the other centre of the comune, San Giorgio di Perlena, also bears the name of a warrior saint dear to that tradition. There are many a Fara and Farra along the road the Lombards took through northern Italy, and that is why «Vicentino» was added here. The place name appears for the first time in a bishop's act of July 1148, and until 1800 it was written Farra.
Between 917 and 921 the emperor Berengar gave Fara and all the land between the Astico and the Brenta to the bishop of Padua, but with a precise obligation: to build castles and defensive works against the Hungarian raids. The nineteenth century, by contrast, was very hard, between epidemics, poverty, pellagra and ruined vineyards, and many left for Europe and for America. In those years Domenico Pittarini lived here, who in his «Politica dei villani» had the peasants say, in rustic dialect, that priests stay priests and lords stay lords.
