Breganze

Province: Vicenza · Region: Veneto · Population: 8,693 · Postal code: 36042

Breganze still counts eleven dovecote towers: about twenty were put up in the sixteenth century, one for each important family, and for a single village that is an unusual concentration. They served to raise pigeons, but above all to say who ran which estate. Before them there had been a castle on the hill of Santa Lucia, sacked twice by the Paduans in 1312 and 1314 and never raised again.

In 1509 the people of Breganze drove back four thousand horsemen of Maximilian of Habsburg on the Chiavone Bianco stream as they headed for Padua, and so spared themselves the sacking suffered by neighbouring villages. The rest of the story is told by the vine: Vespaiolo is made here, and from its grapes left to dry comes Torcolato, the sweet wine that made this strip of hills below the Asiago plateau known.
