Bionaz

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 234 · Postal code: 11010

The final z is not pronounced: Bionaz is said «Bióna». That mark was never a letter but a flourish the clerks of the Kingdom of Sardinia added to names to be stressed on the second-to-last syllable; someone later took it for a z, and it never went away.

This is the northernmost comune of the Aosta Valley and the most glaciated: 15% of its surface, with twenty glaciers, from the 1,490 metres of the village of Places to the 4,171 of the Dent d'Hérens. The 234 residents live in twenty-one villages of the upper Valpelline. In 1877 the abbé Gorret and baron Bich described the local hospitality: the curate kept a couple of beds for those passing through.
