Doues

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 477 · Postal code: 11010

At carnival the Landzette come out, the masks of the Combe Froide: garish uniforms that parody those of Napoleon's troops, who came through here in May 1800 spreading terror. It took the local people centuries to turn that fear into a noisy parade that tours every village of the two valleys.

Doues stands at the mouth of the Valpelline, the valley people here call the Coumba freide for the way winter behaves. The castle of La Crête, now reduced to a farmhouse, belonged to the barons of that name, made lords of Doues by duke Charles II of Savoy in 1543, and later to the marquises Pallavicini. The 477 residents got their village's name back in 1946: Fascism had changed it to Dovia d'Aosta.

Saint Blaise, patron of a village of the barons de la Crête

📅 Every year, on 3 February

Doues celebrates Saint Blaise on 3 February; its parish church stands in the village that gave its name to the noble de la Crête family, made lords of Doues by Duke Charles II of Savoy in 1543, whose coat of arms is still borne by the municipality today.
