Roisan

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 1,042 · Postal code: 11010

Just outside the main village a medieval aqueduct bridge carries the Rû Prévôt across the gully: it is called Grand Arvou, and it is the piece of engineering this comune of the lower Valpelline holds on to. The channel is the same one that has watered the slopes towards Quart since the late thirteenth century.

The name comes from the Romans: it belongs to the group of place names marking a farm estate, here that of an owner called Rosius. The 1,042 residents live on the left bank of the Buthier, eight kilometres from Aosta, in what people here call the Coumba fréda because of the winters. Above them the Becca di Viou reaches 2,855 metres and opens a full circle over the peaks of the valley.

Feast of Saint Victor of Solothurn

📅 Every year, on 30 September

On 30 September Roisan celebrates Saint Victor of Solothurn in the church dedicated to him; at carnival the village parades with the Landzette, the traditional masks of the Combe Froide that parody Napoleonic troop uniforms.
