Valpelline

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 655 · Postal code: 11010

The coat of arms shows a bear walking under a city gate: a stylised Porta Praetoria of Aosta, and the blazon of the de la Porte Saint-Ours, who by the late thirteenth century had become lords of Quart and of the whole Buthier valley. The barony of Quart, Valpelline and Oyace was one of the most important in the Duchy of Savoy.

The comune takes the middle and upper part of the valley north of Aosta, the one people here call the Coumba fréda, the cold valley, for the way winter behaves. It was a cantonal seat from 1802 to 1814. The name its 655 residents carry today came back in 1946: Fascism had changed it to Valpellina.
