Oyace

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 225 · Postal code: 11010

Little is known about the lords of Oyace, and that little is not flattering: it seems that for bad conduct they were deposed and their fortified house razed. The tower remains, the Tornalla, octagonal, mentioned in twelfth-century documents, and it is on the coat of arms too.

Below the village the Buthier, gathering the meltwater of the Grandes Murailles glacier, has carved the Betenda gorge: a stone bridge of 1688 crosses it, heir to a wooden one of 1352. On 5 August the 225 residents walk up in pilgrimage to the sanctuary of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, at Verdonaz, 2,317 metres. The library is named after Aimé Chenal, the man who put the Valdôtain patois into a dictionary.
