Brissogne

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 983 · Postal code: 11020

In 1405 count Amedeo VIII of Savoy invested Thibaut de Montagny with jurisdiction over Brissogne: the family came from the Pays de Vaud, in Switzerland, and held the village until about 1500, when it died out. Their blazon ended up on the comune's coat of arms.

The comune lies on the shaded side of the valley, which in winter barely sees the sun: a cold, snowy season, with the odd mild day when the föhn arrives. High above, on the shore of Lake Les Laures, stands the Ernesto Ménabreaz bivouac. The 983 residents get warm but breezy summers and rain concentrated in spring and autumn.
