Charvensod

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 2,507 · Postal code: 11020

In 1928 the Fascist regime abolished Charvensod and absorbed it into Aosta. It took a petition signed by 424 residents for the comune to exist again, on 30 April 1946. It sits on the envers, the slope that gets no winter sun, and watches the regional capital from the shade while everything opposite is lit.

Above its 2,507 residents the path climbs to the hermitage of San Grato, at almost 1,800 metres, where tradition has the bishop of Aosta retiring to meditate; higher still rise the Becca di Nona and Monte Emilius. The collegiate church of Sant'Orso owned the alpine pasture of Comboé from 1268 until 1999: seven centuries and more of cheese.
