Saint-Marcel

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 1,275 · Postal code: 11020

The mines of Saint-Marcel have been worked since Roman times and stayed in use for centuries. Around them the land keeps far older traces: at Seissogne and Réan there are rock carvings, cup marks and human figures, and in 1990, at Tsampic, a hill fort of the Bronze or Iron Age was identified.

The village of its 1,275 residents lies on the valley floor, but the comune spreads mainly across the shaded side that gets no winter sun, climbing until it covers the whole Saint-Marcel valley, under the Mont Corquet. In 2012, south of the copper mines of Servette, the Roman settlement of Eteley was found, and archaeologists have kept digging it.
