Quart

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 3,872 · Postal code: 11020

The name comes from the fourth Roman milestone out of Aosta, ad quartum lapidem, and is still pronounced the French way, “car”. In 1968 more than 60 Neolithic cist graves came to light above the hamlet of Vollein; the necropolis is open to visitors and counts among the region's key archaeological sites.

On the hill, the castle founded in 1185 by Jacques de la Porte Saint-Ours reopened in 2009 after restoration. Water was the other conquest: the Rû Prévôt, an irrigation channel cut in the late thirteenth century, still carries the Buthier across the sunny slopes where Quart's 3,872 residents make cheese and the local cotechino sausage.
