Feast of Saint Giles
📅 Every year, on 1 September
On 1 September Verrès celebrates Saint Giles, Saint Gilles to the Valdostans. In February the village holds its other feast: the historical carnival that recalls Caterina di Challant.
The Brambilla group employed more than 4,000 people here: some of Italy's finest cotton yarns, a power station, a fertiliser chemical plant and the country's first hydrogen pipeline. It shut down in the 1970s. The building still dominates the centre of town, and now holds a branch of Turin's Politecnico and a technical high school.
Above the town's 2,711 residents stands the castle Ibleto di Challant ordered in the fourteenth century, and higher still the priory of Saint-Gilles, where Ibleto's burial chapel keeps a stone three-light window regarded as a masterpiece of Valdostan Gothic. La Murasse, a 1512 farmstead with a dovecote tower, was the Challant stable block: today it is the library.
