Challand-Saint-Victor

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 611 · Postal code: 11020

Two humpbacked Roman bridges survive in the hamlet of Vervaz: for centuries they were the only link between the two sides of the Val d'Ayas, the sunlit adret and the shaded envers. At Ville, the Casa Masù known as Sala was the home of Caterina di Challant and Pietro d'Introd in the second half of the fifteenth century.

The village is the first you meet coming up the valley from Verrès, and on the Évançon, at Isollaz, the torrent throws a waterfall. Higher up, at the col d'Arlaz, a dolmen shows that people were already crossing here in prehistory. In 1928 Fascism merged the comune with Challand-Saint-Anselme; its 611 residents got their own name back in 1946, by a decree signed by the historian Federico Chabod.
