Gressan

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 3,306 · Postal code: 11020

The ski resort of Pila lies within Gressan, and the cable car from Aosta gets you there without a car; below the pistes the village stays farmland. On the first Sunday of October the Fëta di pomme celebrates the apple harvest, while the Côte de Gargantua, a long moraine ridge above the plain, is a nature reserve.

The Romanesque bell tower of the Madeleine church ranks among the finest in the Aosta Valley. The parish tower has a plainer story: built between 1871 and 1879 from the stones of the medieval stronghold of the lords of Gressan, it still stands on their foundations. The 3,306 residents also have an old magnetite mine at Chanté.
