Jovençan

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 758 · Postal code: 11020

Legend places Cordèle, the mythical capital of the Salassi, on the Châtelair promontory. There is no proof, but in a field beside the Pompiod tower a Celtic coin imitating a Greek silver drachma came to light, and that coin ended up on the comune's coat of arms.

On the same promontory stand the little church of Saint-Georges, built in 1661 after the plague of 1630, and the ruins of the castle of Jovençan, known as the tyrants' castle: it dated from the thirteenth century and in the fourteenth the count of Savoy had it razed, so that only the base of a tower and a few walls survive. The 758 residents also have the Maison des anciens remèdes museum, open since 2011.

Saint Ursus and the tyrants' castle

The patron of Jovençan is Saint Ursus, on 1 February; above the village, on the Châtelair headland, stand the ruins of the castle the Count of Savoy razed to the ground in the 14th century.
