Feast of Saint Maurice
📅 Every year, on 22 September
On 22 September Sarre celebrates Saint Maurice in the church named after him, in the municipality of the royal castle.
In 1869 King Victor Emmanuel II bought the castle of Sarre and turned it into his hunting lodge, riding out from here after ibex in the Cogne, Valsavarenche and Rhêmes valleys, now the Gran Paradiso National Park. When his father Charles Albert abdicated in 1849, he took the title Count of Sarre for himself.
The castle, begun around 1242 by the lords of Bard, overlooks a sun-facing slope planted with vines since antiquity; a Roman milestone unearthed in 1898 records 200 miles to Lyon. Sarre's 4,857 residents make it the region's second-largest town after Aosta. Above the railway, the overhanging crag known as the Tetto holds some of Italy's hardest sport-climbing routes.
