Gressoney-La-Trinité

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 311 · Postal code: 11020

In the first quarter of the coat of arms there is a cross traced back to an old runic alphabet and to Odin, protector of merchants: the people of Gressoney used it as a stamp on their trade documents.

Those merchants spoke German: in 1660 they asked the diocese of Aosta to worship in their own language, since the nearest parish, Issime, was French-speaking; theirs was founded in 1671, and its first priest, Johan Netscher, came from Gressoney, as did every one of his successors until 1883. The village of 311 residents, at the foot of Monte Rosa, is the highest inhabited place in the Lys valley; at Tache stands the Walser ecomuseum.

Saint Francis Xavier, the patron of a church dedicated to the Trinity

📅 Every year, on 3 December

Gressoney-La-Trinité celebrates Saint Francis Xavier on 3 December: since the Trinity, to whom the parish church is dedicated, cannot be attributed to a single patron saint, this role falls to Francis Xavier. The building was consecrated in 1702 by the bishop of Aosta, François-Amédée Milliet d'Arvillars.
