La Magdeleine

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 111 · Postal code: 11020

A stream lines up eight mills: this is the Sentiero dei Mulini, restored not long ago, and some of those mills still turn. They ground the flour for the black bread baked in the village ovens: four of the five hamlets have one.

On Monte Tantané, above the village, Iron Age finds have come to light: a Salassi settlement. The chapel of Saints Roch and Sebastian, at Messelod, was founded by Michel Messelod on 7 June 1672; its façade carries three paintings and the date 1827. The 111 residents live in the Valtournenche, between the Champlong lakes and Lake Charey, and hold a detached piece of territory inside the comune of Antey-Saint-André.
