Chamois

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 94 · Postal code: 11020

Cars do not come into Chamois: it is the only comune on mainland Italy where motor vehicles are not allowed to circulate. You get here by cable car from Buisson, on foot along the les Seingles mule track, or by plane.

The mountain airfield was the idea of Cesare Balbis, who had seen one at Courchevel: opened on 10 September 1967, it is the first in Italy, and the Italian law on mountain landings would only arrive the following year. On the coat of arms is a chamois, chamois in French. Above Corgnolaz, at a little over two thousand metres, lies Lake Lod; the 94 residents have three village wood ovens and a water mill.
