Torgnon

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 517 · Postal code: 11020

On 20 April 1176 pope Alexander III named the parish of Torgnon in a bull, «in Valle tornina»: it seems, then, that this village, from the Latin Tornacus, gave its name to the whole Valtournenche. Older things came first: two protohistoric settlements at Châtel and Chatrian, and a Salassian village on the col Pierrey.

The 517 residents are scattered across twenty-two hamlets on a broad, sunlit morainic terrace, between 800 metres and the 3,320 of Punta Tsan. From the age of the lordships survive the irrigation channels, the rascard barns, the mill of Étirol and the remains of the Chavacour hospice, on the road to the Valais: cattle and the Muscat de Chambave went that way.
