Antey-Saint-André

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 626 · Postal code: 11020

Lake Lod lies at 1,472 metres, its shores taken over by common reed and by other plant species now rare. It is the most delicate corner of a comune that has stayed almost untouched: the one break is the power station on the Marmore, which came on line in 1926.

Antey-Saint-André is the first comune of the Valtournenche, at 1,080 metres, with broad meadows and conifer woods above them. Little Roman material survives, but it speaks: a burial ground near Navillod, bronze boat-shaped fibulae, coins and soapstone fragments between Fiernaz and the main village. Even the name of its 626 residents may be Roman, perhaps from the patronymic Anthesius, though no document proves it.

Saint Andrew, patron whose cross appears on the municipal coat of arms

📅 Every year, on 30 November

Antey-Saint-André celebrates Saint Andrew the Apostle on 30 November; his parish church was built near the remains of a 1364 medieval fortified house, of which only a tower survives, incorporated into the bell tower in 1555, and his cross still appears today on the municipal coat of arms.
