Fénis

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 1,766 · Postal code: 11020

In 1884, when Turin built the castle of its medieval village at the Valentino, the model was Fénis: the most photographed castle in the Aosta Valley, and the work of the Challant, who held the castellany, later barony, from the twelfth century until 1716.

The rest of the comune is another matter: the Val Clavalité, a wild side valley wedged between Champdepraz and Cogne. The cold of the shaded slope discouraged settlement and saved the forest, which covers 2,236 hectares, nearly a third of the territory. During the war the valley was the headquarters of the partisan brigades led by Émile Lexert; today the 1,766 residents live almost entirely down below, where the place names speak of cherry and apple trees.
