Verrayes

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 1,344 · Postal code: 11020

At Diémoz, a hamlet of Verrayes, stood the tenth milestone out of Aosta: ad Decimum ab Augusta lapidem, and that is where the village name comes from. A Roman mansio stood there, and there too a Roman sarcophagus turned up, reused centuries later as the basin of a fountain.

Scholars disagree about the name of the comune: some derive it from verus aer, good air and climate, some from vervactum, land left fallow, and some, on the most widely accepted reading, from vers-ayes, towards the waters in old French. Prehistoric settlement is documented across the land of its 1,344 residents; the winters stay hard and snowy, the summers pleasant.

📅 Every year, on 11 November
