Feast of Saint Denis
📅 Every year, on 9 October
On 9 October Saint-Denis celebrates Saint Denis of Paris, who gives the village its name; at the beginning of December, instead, comes the mistletoe festival.
In 1376 Amedeo VI of Savoy confiscated the fief from the Challant-Cly, accused of crimes and embezzlement: their tower, the castle of Cly, still dominates Saint-Denis from the promontory above Chambave, and it ended up on the comune's coat of arms.
The chapel of Saint-Évence stands where people came to pray before Christianity: a rock carving south-west of the entrance says so, the figure known as the orant. Not far off lies the ghost village of Barmaz. Through the vineyards of the 382 residents runs an old stretch of the Via Francigena, now waymarked in yellow as the Chemins des vignobles.
