From roughly 20 November to 30 January the sun never reaches it: the mountains the village leans against keep Pontey in shadow for two months, and the temperature drops even during the day. In summer, though, the same position gives it more light than its neighbours, so the yearly tally of sunshine hours comes out about even.
The name probably derives from ponticulus, given by the Romans. The comune sits at 525 metres on the right bank of the Dora Baltea, twenty-four kilometres from Aosta, and climbs to the 2,922 metres of Mont Ruvic. Three torrents cross it, among them the Eau-Noire, Éve Née in the local patois, black water. Its 818 residents border Chambave, Saint-Denis, Châtillon and Champdepraz.

Pontey celebrates its patron Saint Martin on 11 November; the other important observance in the town is Carnival, during which the Ferpafrapa effigy is burned, while the church dedicated to him already depended on the bishopric of Aosta in the 12th century.
