Chambave

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 939 · Postal code: 11023

Chambave has been known for its wine since the fourteenth century, and above all for the Muscat that carries its name: vineyards cover much of the sunlit side of the valley, up to 800 metres. Earlier still it was a trading centre, seat of the lordship of Cly and a stop on the via delle Gallie, with important fairs and markets.

The comune straddles the Dora Baltea, eighteen kilometres from Aosta. On the shaded side it climbs to the 3,006 metres of Mont Avic: below 800 metres meadows and chestnut woods, above them larch and red pine. For its 939 residents the col Saint-Pantaléon is the gate towards Torgnon.
