Corleto Perticara

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 2,607 · Postal code: 85012

On 16 August 1860, in a Piazza del Fosso packed with people, the Corletani declared the Bourbon dynasty deposed: from that day the square has been called Piazza del Plebiscito. The Lucanian insurrection started here, and the street names still repeat it: via del Comitato, via 16 agosto, via Giacinto Albini, corso Pietro Lacava.

Eighty years later the town was nearly wiped out: in 1943 the American bombing of the retreating Germans brought down 60% of the houses, and the rebuilding officially ended only in 1978. Of the Norman fort the town had grown around, three arches, some wall and an underground cistern are left. There are 2,607 residents.
