Montemilone

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,725 · Postal code: 85020

In contrada San Nicola, at the spot they call la Gloriosa, the last pieces of a Roman aqueduct are left. It is said to have been built in 143 by Herodes Atticus to bring water to Canosa: eighteen miles of conduit, of which almost nothing can be seen today.

Around the eighth century some Basilian monks settled in the Valle dei Greci and made the hamlet of San Lorenzo there; the peasants who followed them dug their houses into the sandy ground, and those caves can still be seen. The hamlet then split in two, and the part called Mons-Meliorus, the better mount, is the town of today. There are 1,725 residents.

Saint Stephen and the Madonna del Bosco, Montemilone's two co-patrons

📅 Every year, on 26 December and 11-13 August

Montemilone celebrates Saint Stephen on 26 December and the Madonna del Bosco on 11, 12 and 13 August; the Virgin's 13th-century wooden statue, kept in the mother church, is carried to the sanctuary precisely during the August patronal feast.
