The patron saint of Missanello is Saint Nicholas, celebrated on 9 May, in the mother church of San Nicola vescovo, dating from 1578. The town also preserves the church of San Rocco and the hermitage of San Senatro.
The castle of Missanello is first documented in 1154, thanks to the geographical survey that the Norman King Roger II had commissioned from the Arab geographer al-Idrisi for his cartographic work on the Kingdom of Sicily: one of the earliest records of the territory, placing the Lucanian town among the settlements already established by the 12th century.
