Feast of San Floro
📅 Every year, on 18 August
On 18 August San Floro, a municipality of 700 inhabitants in the province of Catanzaro, honours its patron San Floro with a solemn mass and a procession through the streets of the village.
San Floro makes silk. It was one of the chief centres in the province of Catanzaro for Catanzaro silk, and silkworms are still raised here and mulberries still worked; the looms and tools that the village families gave away are what started the Museo della Seta. The other thing made here is white figs, split open and dried in the sun the way they always were: since the early nineteen hundreds San Floro has been known as the land of figs.
The name is the patron saint's. San Floro and his brother Lauro, who would not renounce their faith, were arrested, condemned, lowered into a well and buried alive; the feast falls on 18 August, with solemn mass and a procession through the village. The village sits on a hill terrace from which you can see Catanzaro, the Sila mountains and, to the east, the Ionian. The castle of the Caracciolo dukes, who spent their summers here, is still standing and well kept; the earthquake of 1783, on the other hand, took away the old church of Santa Caterina.
