Saint Andrew is the patron of Amalfi and his feast falls twice a year. On 26 and 27 June the town keeps the "patronage": the memory of the miracle by which in 1544 the saint — with Saint Trofimena and Saint Matthew — saved Amalfi, Minori and Salerno from the attack of the pirate Hayreddin Barbarossa. 30 November is the liturgical feast.
On both occasions the awaited moment is the same: the procession with the blessing of the sea on the beach, and then the final run up the cathedral staircase, the statue carried at speed to the top. That run is more recent than it looks: it was done for the first time in the late 1940s.
