Tornolo

Tornolo is the comune of Emilia-Romagna closest to the Ligurian Sea: from the hamlet of Santa Maria del Taro to the sea is thirty-five kilometres. It borders Liguria on several sides, and its territory has a shape recalling a butterfly's wings, two broad parts joined by the thinnest of waists. Here, on the southern side of Monte Penna, the Taro rises, and its waters have fed the hydroelectric station of Strinabecco since 1919.

The village belonged to the Malaspina, the Fieschi and then the Landi, and stayed inside their state until 1682, when Andrea III Doria Landi sold it to the Farnese. The coat of arms keeps the reckoning of those lordships: the red and silver band comes from the Luxardo, the ears of wheat from the Granello, the three crowns from the Franchi of Genoa, and the imperial chief is there to recall that the fief always belonged to families of the Ghibelline party. At Santa Maria del Taro stands the church founded in the eighth century by the monks of Bobbio and raised to a sanctuary in 1259: on the high altar it keeps a small late fifteenth-century Madonna and Child that tradition says was given by Saint Catherine Fieschi Adorno.
