Read more →The Romans took Bedonia in 167 before Christ: the proconsul Marcus Fulvius Nobilior set fire to the forest of Monte Penna and deported part of the inhabitants to Samnium. Then, on the wood that was left, they put a forest restriction, and the restriction held: the richness of trees in the area came through intact at least until the year one thousand. Under its Roman name, Bitunia, the village appears in Trajan's alimentary table.
Between 1941 and 1943 Bedonia was a place of free internment: twenty-eight Jewish refugees from the Balkans and Dalmatia lived here under forced residence. After the German occupation seven were arrested, at the end of November, and deported to Auschwitz in April 1944; the others fled and nearly all of them survived. The stumbling stones have been laid in front of the houses where they had lodged.
