San Lorenzo Isontino

Province: Gorizia · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,548 · Postal code: 34070

In the spring of 1915 the Isonzo front came down on the village: shells on the houses, and almost the whole population deported to Landegg, a camp at the gates of Vienna, where it stayed until the early months of 1918. Sixty-one villagers died there of illness and hardship. In 1988 the municipality twinned itself with Pottendorf, the Austrian town of that camp.

The second border story ended here on 30 November 1991: at San Lorenzo the Cagliari blocking battalion was disbanded, because with the Cold War behind them there was no Gorizia Gap left to defend. The village was called San Lorenzo di Mossa until 1968; the neoclassical parish church is of 1923, and in the coat of arms the saint holds the palm of martyrdom beside his gridiron.
