Mossa

Province: Gorizia · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,659 · Postal code: 34070

The first time Mossa can be read in a document is in 1064: countess Hadwig «of Mossa» makes a donation to the cathedral of Aquileia. She was an important figure for the birth of the future county of Gorizia, and as a widow she chose to live here, in the castle, which a fire destroyed in 1480; the one they raised afterwards was smaller, and they called it Cjascjelût, the little castle.

The village got its first autonomy only in 1877, breaking away from Lucinico. In 1915 it was occupied at once and its people were taken to Austria until the end of the war; in 1928 the comune was joined to Capriva together with San Lorenzo and Moraro, and became a comune again only on the twenty-sixth of August 1955. The border with Slovenia runs a few kilometres away.
