San Floriano del Collio

Province: Gorizia · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 798 · Postal code: 34070

San Floriano del Collio is called Števerjan in Slovene, and here Slovene is not a memory: it is the language of the majority, protected by law, and in the hamlets people speak the dialect of the Collio, the one from the Brda just across the border. Every hamlet has two names, one per language: Bukovje and Bucuie, Jazbine and Giasbana, Križišče and Bivio. Since 1971 the village club has held the festival of Slovene folk music, on the first weekend of July.

The administrative history of this municipality ended up inside the history of the border. In 1928 San Floriano was abolished and merged into San Martino Quisca; in 1947 San Martino Quisca passed to Yugoslavia, and San Floriano, which had stayed on this side, was attached to Capriva del Friuli. It became a municipality of its own again only in 1951. They call it the land of grapes and cherries: the hills are all vineyard, and the wine of the Collio is exported half across the world.
