Savogna d'Isonzo

Province: Gorizia · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,727 · Postal code: 34070

Sovodnje, the Slovene name, means «confluence»: here the Vipacco runs into the Isonzo, and most of the inhabitants are Slovene-speaking. On the Roman road between Aquileia and Ljubljana there was a bridge, of timber and of calcarenite quarried no more than five kilometres away: when the river is low its remains can still be seen.

In 238 the people of Aquileia, frightened by Maximinus Thrax marching on Italy, pulled that bridge down; the river was in spate with the thaw, so he had his soldiers requisition the peasants' barrels and crossed on those. On the Karst the hillforts are left: the one on the Brestovec, lived in between 1600 and 1300 before Christ, has a double wall, a hundred and sixty metres round the outside and seventy-five inside. They were wrecked by the First World War, whose front ran here.
