Feast of Santa Maria Assunta
📅 Every year, on 15 August
On 15 August Tramonti di Sotto, a municipality of 410 inhabitants in the province of Pordenone, celebrates its patroness Santa Maria Assunta (Assumption of Mary).
In standard Friulian it is written Tramonç Disot, but those who live there call it Vildisot, which is another word altogether. The comune lies in the Val Tramontina, along the road climbing to the Rest pass, and its territory is out of all proportion to the people in it: more than eighty square kilometres for a few hundred inhabitants, and ten neighbouring comuni, Clauzetto among them. The centre gathers around the pieve of Santa Maria Maggiore.
In 1976 the Friuli earthquake struck it full on: huge collapses, and a village to rebuild from scratch. There is also a small anomaly that has lasted seventy years. The coat of arms and the banner were granted in 1954, and the decree describes the banner as a green cloth; the one the comune actually uses, however, is white. Nobody has ever corrected either the paper or the cloth.
